I think the content of chapter 2 of Life in the UK Handbook is very important for future new UK citizen.
It says about values and principles of United Kingdom, about rights and responsibilities which apply to everyone living in the UK.
There are also information about the format of the handbook format of the Life in the UK test but these were mentioned by me in my previous posts.
I will rather focus on values which are based on British traditions & history and which are protected by law.
Handbook says “there is no place for extremism and intolerance” in the UK.
Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance for people of different faiths, actively participating in the life of community- these are the fundamental
principles of British life.
Pledge to follow these values is a part of citizenship ceremony.
Based on these values, citizens of UK get their freedoms and responsibilities which must be respected by all people living in United Kingdom.
Permanent resident of the UK should: follow & respect the law, respect the rights of others and their opinions, treat other people with fairness, look after his/hers family,
his or hers neighbourhood and environment.
For following all these, UK citizen has right to freedom of religion & belief, freedom of speech, freedom from unfair discrimination, a right to a fair trial and right to vote
for new government.
Freedom is a very important or I could say the most important thing to me.
English fought for their freedoms which they now enjoy and all values which I’ve listed are very close to my heart.
Individual liberty, freedom of speech, religious tolerance are privileges which modern people should be able to enjoy and I am very glad that UK as country is based on such
principles.
Also the care for native land, for the environment is a very important factor to me.
I can observe with growing concern that these values are becoming “inconvenient” for some people living in the UK now.
I hope that things won’t change in a bad way and traditional “rights of Englishmen” (or rather rights of the British now) will stay untainted.
I hope that British person won’t be silenced by speaking the truth, won’t be forced to abandon a freedom to move freely and that freedom of speech won’t be threatened.
