Todays is Sunday so a little lazier day but I am determined to study, even a little’ every day.
Thankfully chapter 3 of the handbook is rather short and easy to remember.
It is about different countries from which the UK consists and phrases used to describe them.
Handbook warns that even if chapter 3 is short it is important to understand all facts which it contains.
It is very likely that there will be question from this chapter and it may be formulated in various ways, for example:
a. “What are the differences between Great Britain, the British Isles and Britain?”
b. “What the Crown dependencies are?”

So "What is the UK?"
United Kingdom is made of England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.
The rest of the Ireland is an independent country.
The official name of UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island.
"Great Britain" refers ONLY to England, Scotland & Wales.
The words "Britain", "British Isles" or "British" are used to everyone in the UK.
There are several islands which are which are closely connected to the UK but are not part of it.
These are:
- the Channel Islands & the Isle of Man which have their own governments and are called "Crown dependencies"
- several British overseas territories in other parts of the world like St Helena & the Falkland Islands
They are also linked to the UK but are not part of it.

United Kingdom is governed by the Parliament sitting in Westminster.
Scotland, Wales and Norther Ireland have their own parliaments or assemblies, with devolved powers in defined areas.

It is all for me to learn today.
