Everything I need to study for the British citizenship test can be found in “Life in the UK Test Handbook” which I purchased some time ago.
I’ve paid £8.99.
Handbooks are widely available and I bought mine in Waterstones.
I was told it is best to have the newest edition as it contains the latest updates from Home Office.
There is also additional book which can be acquired – “Life in the UK Test Practice Questions”.
I haven’t bought this one because I think it is better to access free online tests at www.lifeintheuk.net
Handbook contains same material as given by the Home Office in “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents”.
The sections of book which must be the main focus of a reader are chapters 2 to 6 containing official test materials.
If I was thoughtful enough to buy iPhone, I could get “Brit Test” app on my phone what would be handy if one fancy studying on ones way to work and back etc.
Basic things about test which must be remembered are: I will have only 45 minutes to reply to 24 multiply choice questions.
Test centre will provide a computer.
I will pass if I reply to 18 questions correctly.
Problem is that questions may be based on really important and major events from history sport etc but also stuff which was only BRIEFLY mentioned between chapters 2 and 6.
So actually everything must be memorised.
Handbook says that there will be no need to remember ALL dates of birth and death of important or famous people, but we must know dates of annual festivals.
So I must make sure I remember in which month is Hanukkah.
Now, the bit which I find really crazy id=s a fact that I will need to memorize all famous peple mentioned and listed in summary in the end of book.
It is obvious we must know who Anne Boleyn was or Queen Victoria, or Winston Churchill as they were important people in history of UK.

But I must also recognize artists, film directors, sport people and architects and inventors and British cities and Commonwealth.
I will have problem with sportsmen as I am not a sport fan.
It may be difficult to remember all these people and battles and political events but I must.
And questions can be tricky, asking about facts from book indirectly.
Apparently it is because I will be tested on my understanding of the subjects.
That is why making lots of mock tests is an important exercise.
